Reasons You'll Love Mount Charleston

Las Vegas is a city known for its nightlife, dining experiences, and entertaining shows but just 45 minutes north of the city you’ll find the polar opposite. A calm, scenic, mountainous getaway at Mt. Charleston.

Over the weekends Mt. Charleston is full of energy and activity. Visitors drive up from Las Vegas to enjoy the scenic getaway every season of the year.  Whether it’s over the winter to enjoy the snow and freshly powdered skiing trails or to beat the summer heat while soaking up the fresh mountain air, it’s always about 20 degrees cooler than the metropolitan area of Las Vegas.

Mt. Charleston homeowners say the real magic happens during the week. The community is quiet and tranquil with few lights to be seen and minimal commercial development. Whether you are just visiting or you call Mt. Charleston home it’s a timeless destination and true escape for those who love nature and fresh mountain air.

Here are 5 Reasons We Love Mt. Charleston

1. Convenient Location.

Just 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas you’ll find this perfect getaway to escape the heat, feel the cool mountain breeze, smell the fresh air and enjoy the all-around scenic beauty of Mt. Charleston.

Mt. Charleston is part of the Spring Mountain Range and the Toiyabe National Forest. It rises between 3,000 to just under 12,000 feet in elevation and covers more than 56,000 total acres with green forestry and wildlife.

Shopping centers and grocery stores of northwest Las Vegas or Summerlin are within easy driving distance. You can also reach the Las Vegas Strip, Downtown or McCarran International Airport in just under an hour. Whether you are looking for the right home in this mountain retreat or prefer to buy in close proximity there are many convenient locations to choose from.

2. In Touch With Nature.

Mt. Charleston is enriched with juniper trees, mountain mahogany, Aspen and Ponderosa pine. Animals such as wild burros, horses, songbirds, deer and desert tortoises roam the mountain terrain.

While Las Vegas is known for its surrounding desert there are waterfalls, forests and wildflowers all throughout Mt. Charleston. It’s an enchanting escape especially when hiking the 52 miles of total trails you can certainly anticipate a lot of scenic routes.

3. Hiking Trails That Unwind the Mind.

One of the popular hikes, Mary Jane Falls trail, has a seasonal waterfall and a cave that overlooks the mountainous valley. This two-mile trail is a great spot to start. Another easy hike is Fletcher Canyon which features walls up to 100 feet and scenic wildlife.

The 10-mile Bonanza Peak trail you’ll wild horses, beautiful and flower filled meadows.

Big Falls also has a seasonal 100-foot waterfall with Cathedral Rock and impressive views.  The more advanced, 17-mile Charleston Peak trail features gorgeous wildflower meadows. Lastly, Griffith Peak offers views of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon and Lake Mead.

4. It’s the Perfect Summer Escape.

At Kyle Canyon, more than 7,000 feet in elevation, there are 24 log cabins at Mt Charleston Lodge. This cozy and modern refuge is a great place to beat the summer heat. Each cabin has a spacious outdoor deck, a fireplace and a restaurant nearby at The Mt. Charleston Lodge.

The Lodge offers breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and live music on weekend nights. If you prefer to get more rugged there are more than 200 campsites, 160 picnic areas and RV spaces available in the Mt. Charleston area.

5. A High-altitude Winter Oasis.

It feels like a world away from the city of Las Vegas but in just 45 minutes you can break away from the desert terrain and find solitude at this high-altitude oasis.

Lee Canyon sits at an elevation of 8,000 to 8,500 feet and is known as the Lee Canyon Ski and Snowboard Resort. Unlike other mountain retreats, the location manages to be both remote and incredibly convenient during the winter season.
